A Warning from History - Amazing Similarities to our Times!
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it
was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness;
it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of
incredulity; it was the season of Light, it was the
season of Darkness; it was the spring of hope, it was
the winter of despair; we had everything before us,
we had nothing before us; we were all going directly
to Heaven, we were all going the other way."
Charles Dickens penned those words to describe the perils of the French Revolution, which is
the evil grandfather of the current social war on faith, family & morality. Fascinating, isn’t it?
Couldn’t his words describe the contrast, in this moment of history, between the unprecedented
access to the ‘light’ of our Catholic faith and the ‘darkness’ of seeking heaven on earth through
mere human achievement and governmental programs. Will we, as families, take action to
avoid the laxity in learning, living and sharing the faith that preceded the bloodbath of
18th century France?
Is a ‘Year of Faith’ really a cure for the ailments which plague the world?
If you exercise that faith, then YES!
In Luke 17:19, Jesus said to the leper: “Your faith has made you well.” Learning, living, loving and sharing our Catholic Faith not only makes us well, it transforms the whole human family- just like a dash of leaven raises the whole of the dough.
|Is God listening? Or, is our faith weak?
Do you sometimes feel like your prayers and supplications to God over the issues of abortion, religious
freedom, etc., have been in vain? Well, Jesus assured us
in Luke 18:7-8: “And will not God vindicate his elect, who
cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I
tell you, he will vindicate them speedily.” So, we can
definitely trust that God is answering our prayers.
However, we must read Jesus’ promise in context. The
line that follows in Luke 18:8 is “Nevertheless, when the
Son of man comes, will he find faith on earth?” Here
we find our exercise of faith linked closely to
God’s speedy response to our cry for justice and renewal.
Methodical Teaching a Must within the Catholic Family!
Blessed Pope John Paul II charged us parents with a
most important duty: “Christian parents must strive to
follow and repeat, within the setting of family life, the
more methodical teaching received elsewhere.”
He further exhorted, “there cannot be too great an effort
on the part of Christian parents to prepare for this
ministry of being their own children's catechists and to
carry it out with tireless zeal.”
Finally, he left us with a great hope as to the
fruit of our efforts: “The fact that these truths about the main
questions of faith and Christian living are thus repeated within a family setting impregnated with
love and respect will often make it possible to influence the children in a decisive way for life.”
Isn’t our greatest desire to lead our children to Christ?
